Art Profile: New Jack Bush Works

In keeping with the Club's Canadian Art mandate, two Jack Bush pieces
have been acquired on loan from the Canada Council Art Bank in O ttawa.
Big One (bottom right) hangs in the Upper Lounge, while Gold Corner (top
right) now sits in the Garden Lounge.
Bush (above) is best-known for his abstract work done from the 1950s
to 1970s, and represented Canada at the 1967 Sao Paulo Bienal. Prior to
committing himself full-time to painting in 1968, Bush created
advertisements and illustrations for 42 years.
While his work, like many local painters of the era, was initially
influenced by the Group of Seven, he later began to experiment with
abstraction after seeing several pieces in Toronto and N ew York. H e
eventually joined Painters Eleven, an artist group which banded together
to promote abstract painting in Toronto.
Bush died, age 68, in 1977 - one year after receiving the honour of
Officer of the Order of Canada.
