The first round of tucks is now complete; tighten by pulling on the strand ends.
To this point, the procedure is identical to that for the basic Eye Splice.
Now tie a Double Wall and Crown Knot as follows. Hold the throat of the
splice between your thumb and forefinger with the strands emerging upward and
spreading over the top of your fist, like the petals of a flower. To begin the wall
knot, the first step in this three-step knot, take any strand and, moving
counterclockwise, lead it over the strand next to it. (We will call this the second
strand.) Allow the bight (loop) formed to remain prominent because you will
need it later.
The second strand leads under the first strand, then under the third strand, as
in the drawing. The third strand then leads under the second strand and up
through the bight formed in the first step. This sounds complicated, but if you
follow the illustration as you work, you’ll see it is straightforward.
Gather the knot evenly, but keep it loose.
Take any strand and, continuing to work counterclockwise, lead it over the
strand next to it, leaving a bight. Lead the second strand over the first strand,
