Three-strand twisted rope Swedish fid
Vinyl tape or whipping twine

Unlay (untwist) the rope for 2 or 3 inches (50 to 80 mm), and tape each of the
individual ends or seize them tightly with twine (see chapter 13). Tape again at
the point where the unlaying should end. For this splice in ¾-inch (19 mm) rope,
that would be 24 inches (600 mm) from the working end of the rope. Add the
amount of rope necessary to form the eye and tape again at the throat of the
splice.
Unlay the rope back to the first piece of tape. To avoid a twist in the eye of the
finished splice, untwist the rope just a half turn between the pieces of tape.
To do the first tuck, raise a strand just below the tape on the standing part of
the rope and insert the middle working strand under it (A). You can usually do
this with your fingers, but if the line is twisted too tightly, use a Swedish fid.
