Vinyl tape or whipping twine

Unlay the rope 2 or 3 inches (50 to 80 mm) and tape or seize each of the
individual strands. Tape where the unlaying is to end. For ¾-inch (19 mm) rope,
that would be 12 inches (300 mm) from the working end for a three-tuck splice;
16 inches (400 mm) for four tucks. Unlay the rope to the tape.
Pass the first strand on the left (Strand A) through the ring from front to back
and around the ring, coming out to the right of itself. Work Strands B and C the
same way, then pass Strand C to the left, over itself, and back between itself and
Strand B. Draw up this round of tucks tightly and remove the tape.
To work the second round of tucks, pick up the middle strand (B), pass it over
the base of the third strand (C), and tuck it under the strand below (A).
