The bitter end of a rope is often finished with whipping; this splice is a

good alternative when improved grip is important.

                                               TOOLS & MATERIALS

                                               Three-strand twisted rope
                                                        Swedish fid
                                              Vinyl tape or whipping twine
                                                 Scissors or sharp knife
Hot knife or heat source Ruler

Unlay about 3 inches (75 mm) of rope and tape or seize the individual ends.
Tape where the unlaying should end. For this splice in ¾-inch (19 mm) rope, that
would be about 16 inches (400 mm) from the working end for a four-tuck splice.
Unlay the rope to the tape.

Hold the rope at the tape between your thumb and forefinger with the strands
emerging upward and spreading over the top of your fist, like the petals of a
               flower.
To begin, crown the three strands. To do this, take any strand and, moving
counterclockwise, lead it over the strand next to it (we will call this the second
strand). Allow the resultant bight, or loop, to remain prominent, because you will

               need it later.
The second strand leads over the first strand, then over the third strand. This
