Monitoring
Step 4
Monitoring During Treatment
During a treatment cycle, it is necessary to periodically monitor the following:
• Output of the M1 power control panel
• Soil temperatures
• Check hea ng element breakers (once per day)
Output of the M1 power control panel
If possible, the output temperature of the Chromalox 1604 Temperature Controller should be observed at least once every 6 hours during opera on. The need for observa on is simply to ensure that the con- troller has not tripped the high limit controller and shut down power to the hea ng elements.
Soil/sludge temperatures
Soil/sludge temperatures should be monitored periodically (approximately every 6 to 12 hours) to de- termine the progress of soil/sludge treatment. This is done by inser ng thermocouple probes (photo 6) through the exterior of the M1 and into the soil/sludge. These probes are typically placed between hea ng elements and between layers.
A Fluke Mul meter ( ed with a thermocouple adapter) is used for reading the thermocouple tempera- tures. Once the thermocouples read between 350F and 650F, the treatment should be complete.
CAUTION: When the thermocouple probe is removed from the soil/sludge – it will be hot. At the end of a soil/sludge treatment cycle, soil/sludge temperatures between 350F and 650F would typically indicate that the soil/sludge has been treated to desired levels.
