Pine-Richland School District - Return to School
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Parents
● Open windows in classrooms if applicable.
● Prop open classroom doors for cross-ventilation and to reduce the use of touchpoints.
● Adjust HVAC units so that nurses’ offices are slightly lower pressure than the rest of the
buildings. Additional air cleaners will be considered for the health offices.
● Ensure restroom exhaust fans are operational.
Filter Efficiency: The district’s commercial-grade units have filters with an efficiency rating between
MERV 6 and MERV 8 (designed for larger particulate down to spores/mold/allergens). Filters are being
checked/replaced. If applicable in some schools based on the type of equipment, higher efficiency filters
will be considered.
Consideration factors: Air quality decreases when increasing outside air into the system (allergens);
Bringing in more humid air that must be conditioned; Energy usage increases; Increased load on aging
HVAC systems.
FACEMASKS & SHIELDS
Q: Are face masks required for staff and students?
A: Yes. The order by Governor Wolf and PDE regarding face coverings is important to understand. Face
coverings include any type of synthetic or natural fiber (scarfs, bandanas, etc.) or plastic face shields that
cover the nose and mouth. Public health experts - including the PRSD Healthcare Leadership Council
experts - strongly promote face coverings as a critical mitigation strategy. Certain staff, such as food
service, custodians, and nurses, may have specialized personal protective equipment requirements. There
are rare exceptions to this requirement for individuals with documented conditions. Students will need
to keep their masks on the entire time they are at school unless an adult provides direction for a
mask-break when certain conditions are met.
Q: What if my child forgets his or her face mask or shield?
A: The district will have extra, unused facemasks should someone forget a face mask.
Q: For health reasons, my child cannot use a face mask. What is the protocol for notifying the
school?
A: Face masks are highly encouraged. If that is not feasible, it is recommended students use face shields.
There are rare exceptions to this requirement for individuals with documented conditions. If a child has a
medical condition in which he or she cannot wear a face shield, a parent should work with the school
nurse and building administrator(s).
HAND SANITIZING DISPENSERS & OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Q: Will there be hand sanitizing dispensers for students?
A: Hand sanitizer dispensers are available in high-traffic areas in each school building. Sanitizer will also
