STAGE OR
SCAFFOLD
HITCH
The boatswain's chair
at sea and the swing on
land are both planks
suspended from two
ropes to form hanging
chairs. Whether used to
support a man at the
top of a yard or to
amuse a child, its
purpose is always to
support a person in mid·
air, and so the ropes
have to be tied very
carefully. A sure and
simple way of doing
this is by preparing a
plank with two small
battens at right angles
to it at each end.
