JURY MAST KNOT

This knot, also known as the
       masthead knot, is useful to
       sailors as an emergency
measure to rig a jury mast.
       The central loop is dropped
over the mast and the shrouds
and stays are fixed to the
       other three loops by sheet
       bends.

       Method
Make a turn to form the
       central loop (1). Twist your
       hand counterclockwise to
form the left side loop (2) and
       clockwise to form the right
side loop (3). Lace the left
       loops through the central
loop, sliding it first over and
then under the left edge of
that loop. Slide the right loop
under the right edge of the
central loop (4, 5). The result
should look like figure 6. Be
      sure all crossings are as
       illustrated. Take hold of the
       innermost loop by passing the
index and middle finger of the
       right hand under then over
the turns and the left hand
over then under the turns (7,
      8). Continue to pull sideways
to form the two side loops.
       Pulling the central loop finally
      tightens the whole knot (9).
