This knot, called the cross
knot by sailors, is known only
as a decorative knot. but it has
a good grip when pulled tight
and could be used instead of
the jury mast knot if made in
strong rope. It is used
decoratively on bags and
purses, and if worked in tape
or ribbon it can produce
imaginative results.
Method
Form an overhand knot,
leaving a very long end (1).
Hold the knot vertically and
make a second overhand knot
on the right side (2, 3). Form
the third loop at the top by
pulling the turn connecting
the two knots (4). Insert the
index and middle fingers into
where the side knots are inter·
twined to get hold of the ends
of the two eyes at the point
where they intertwine (5,6);
pull them outwards to form
the side loops which should
be symmetrical (7). Tighten
the side loops first, then the
top one, making sure that all
three are the same shape (8).
