Happy New Year
The fiscal (financial year) is an accounting period which businesses, charities, and non-profit
organisations utilise for financial and tax reporting processes. The start of the fiscal year is able to
begin on any day of any month but must run for 12 months which allows businesses to begin their
activities on the date they choose without waiting for the beginning of the calendar year.
The Calendar year beginning January 1 – December 31 is based on the Gregorian calendar. This
calendar is the International standard for dates and is often used for religious, social, administrative,
business or personal events. Other businesses operate from March 31 to April 1 or June 30 to July 1,
whilst other businesses use the calendar year as their fiscal year. The choice to use the International
calendar year as their financial year allows businesses to link with other international businesses or
society’s public holidays and events. An extra advantage for businesses to begin and close in
association with society’s dates of events and public holidays permits families to spend time
together.
The accounting process divides the financial year into quarters, so the financial health of the
accounts are regularly reviewed. The revised knowledge explains why a loss or deterioration of the
finances may have occurred. The provided analysis of accounts allows the committee or organisation
to discover a solution to the depleting funds.
With the COVID restrictions preventing many events combined with fewer members at our meetings,
our committee implemented several successful financial strategies. A donation to the movie, pizza
nights, the promotion and selling of the gear shop contents at a reduced rate, combined with the
Christmas party raffle. The actions improved our financial status. Thank you to the members who
helped implement the idea into a process.
The purpose of knowing the financial status of our club is to ensure we can continue to provide club
activities and events for all members to enjoy whilst continuing to support the Salvation Army, the
Flying Doctors and UCARF.

Climate Change
The Aboriginals in a remote part of Northern Australia asked their new elder if the coming winter was
going to be cold or mild. Since he was an elder in a modern community he had never been taught
the old secrets. When he looked at the sky he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like.
Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and
that the members of the tribe should collect firewood to be prepared.
But being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea.
He walked out to the telephone booth on the highway, called the Bureau of Meteorology and asked,
'Is the coming winter in this area going to be cold?'
The meteorologist responded, 'It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold..'
So, the elder went back to his tribe and told them to collect even more wood in order to be prepared.
A week later he called the Bureau of Meteorology again. 'Does it still look like it is going to be a very
cold winter?' The meteorologist again replied, 'Yep, it's going to be a very cold winter.'
The elder went back to his tribe and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find.
Two weeks later the elder called the Bureau again. Hey, 'Are you absolutely sure that the winter is
going to be very cold?.
'Absolutely,' the guy replied. 'It's looking more and more like it is going
to be one of the coldest winters ever.'
'How can you be so sure?' the elder asked.
The weatherman replied, 'Our satellites have reported that the
Aboriginals in the north are collecting firewood like crazy, and that's
always a sure sign.'
