Weipa Mine & Town Tours
If you want an unexpected highlight of your visit to the Cape,
then the Weipa Mine and Town tour will give you exactly that.
With two 3 to 3.5 hour tours each day, heavily booked
throughout the season, there’s the opportunity to learn so much
about Weipa and its beginnings, its services and attractions, the
local wildlife and more. The icing on the cake is the latter half of
the tour where you get to learn about the whole bauxite mining
process and its intricacies.
From the early mining days in the 1960’s through to today’s
modern operation of one of the world’s largest bauxite mines
and then looking to the future, you’ll be amazed; and then
when you drive in and get a first-hand look at one of Rio Tinto’s
open cut mining sites, you’ll get an idea of the huge size and
scope of the operation. Just the sight of one of the 190T ore
haulers is more than impressive.
OH&S regulations do stipulate that closed-in footwear must be
worn. Children less than 5 years old are not allowed on the
mine site.
The tour picks up from the Weipa Camping Ground and the
Albatross Resort for an 8:00am or 2:30pm start.
