Wot’s On
Weipa Fishing Classic
Folk come from all over Australia to participate in the Weipa
Fishing Classic. The annual event, held over three days in
September, has a prize pool of over $150,000.
Drawing competitors and spectators from all over Australia, it is
one of the few fishing competitions where you don’t need to
wet a line to be in for a chance to win. Just by purchasing a
keyring you could walk away with any number of great prizes
including the top prize of a boat.
Weipa Running Festival
Held in July, this is a great test of human endurance and a lot of
fun. I like to think it is an extension of the original great Weipa
running event (until political correctness got in the way), ‘The
Running of the Bulls’. The Running of the Bulls was a male only
affair, timed to commence after the first decent wet season
storm, in the dead of the night, with the blokes
wearing….NOTHING!!!
Weipa Pig Hunt
As permission to hunt is required on all land and station
properties on Cape York, the Weipa Pig Hunt is a spectator only
event for those not living locally. Held over two days the Weipa
Pig Hunt helps, in a small way, to eradicate wild pigs, an
introduced endemic problem on Cape York. Pigs destroy the
native flora and fauna including the nests and offspring of the
Olive Ridley, Flatback and Hawksbill turtles.
Weipa Bullride
Weipa Bullride has something for everyone. Held in August over
two days and nights, it’s a top weekend for all the family. You’ll
see Cape York’s best bull riders battle the Cape’s toughest
bovine athletes in a thrilling ride to wear the champion’s buckle.
Both nights have a cabaret with a band playing until midnight.
There’s also the Weipa Dirt Kart Track, Weipa Motocross Club,
sporting groups, clubs, gym, churches, library - with a ton of
history – the list goes on and on.
