Thursday Island (Waiben)
Thursday Island, known locally as TI, is the most populous of
the islands, and since 1877 has been the administrative centre
for the Torres Strait islands and parts of the Cape.
For many years Thursday Island was the centre of the Torres
Strait pearling industry, with hundreds of luggers operating
from the port. Today the main focus is on tourism and the
crayfish industry.
An easy day trip from Seisia on Peddells Ferry, a visit to the
island is a great way to get an appreciation of its culture and
history. You might be surprised when you take a wander
through the bustling main street! Peddells offer a very
informative tour of TI and Horn Island.
Head up to the heritage-listed Green Hill Fort, a not too difficult
walk or a quick taxi ride. The museum is fascinating, and the
outlook is spectacular with 270-degree panoramic views over
Thursday Island harbour, Prince of Wales, Horn, Friday, Goode
and Hammond Islands.

Horn Island (Ngurupai)
From TI it’s a quick trip by water taxi across to Horn Island.
Apart from being a commercial (and International) airport, it’s a
tour centre complete with accommodation and meals, and rich
in fascinating WW2 history.
Much of the evidence of its role as Australia’s northernmost
operations base is still on display. To make the most of your
experience, take the tour to those historical sites.
The museum is a must!
