Chapter 4
Getting to the Tip via the
PDR
Getting to the Tip of Cape York involves 3 roads. The PDR,
Telegraph Road, and the Bamaga Road (sometimes referred to
as the Bamaga bypass road).
A common misconception is that to get to The Tip you must
drive the Old Telegraph Track (OTT). Not true!!!! The Bamaga
Road (aka northern/southern bypass roads) north of Bramwell
Junction, so named because it bypasses all the creek crossings,
sees you safely through without wetting a tyre.
An often-asked question is ‘will my vehicle make it up the
Cape?’ Almost any car you see parked outside your local
supermarket will get to the top of the Cape travelling on the
PDR, Telegraph and Bamaga Roads. Having said that, the trip
will be far more comfortable in a 4WD.
Breakdowns can occur anywhere, however, recovery of your
vehicle can be very expensive on Cape York, so it does pay to
have top level road recovery assistance. RACQ have approved
towing services in Cooktown, Weipa and Bamaga.
