From the Branch President
In her book Friends of Voltaire, the early twen eth century writer Evelyn
Beatrice Hall, under the pen name SG Tallantyre, tried to summarize the
philosopher’s a>tude to free speech in the words “ I disapprove of what you
say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Our thoughts are not
our ac ons and debate/discussion is the mark of a free, civil society.
Ulysses is not a very diverse club but within the parameters of our members
there are differing social and poli cal views. Those members silly enough to
express their opinions (and I am frequently one of them) are free to have those
opinions. We are a motorcycle riders club and that is what is important. Some
members will express views which are abhorrent to others. They are
nevertheless members of the club, of the branch, and are welcome among us.
I have heard recently of members who no longer associate with Central Victoria Ulysses Branch because they have
been told they are unwelcome because of their poli cal and social views. This is not the inclusive branch which we
should be.
Perhaps members with strong views should keep them to themselves and s ck to discussing motorcycles. And
members who find others’ views abhorrent, should remember that the world and our club, is made up of different
people, all of whom belong in the world and in the club.
I will see you on the road.
Best Regards
Michael Hennessy
