Letters To The Editor
President Allan,
I have been friends with Peter ‘the Bear’ Thoeming since before the Ulysses club
started, hence my early introduction and number. In 1986 I was on an outback
charity ride, the Bourke Police Outback Trek. We were camped at Innamincka and
someone mentioned that they had a Sydney friend who was a member of “a very
exclusive club”. “You mean this one”, I said, pointing to the Ulysses Club sticker on my
KLR600. Anyway..
I recently renewed membership and noticed that my new card had me as a member
since 11th November 1985. Then I noticed that my previous card had me as a
member since 11th October 1985. To settle all arguments, I submit a handwritten letter
from the 1985 secretary, Peter Lewin, welcoming me to membership, dated 9th
September 1985. If the Editor would like to publish that rare document in Riding On,
that’s just fine.
I’m still riding a lot, and am heading to New Zealand in February to lead a tour there by
a group of ‘senior’ Americans under the flag of MotoQuest (Alaska) Limited. I have been
involved with the motorcycle touring business since 1987. Worth a story on its own. Our
own Ulysses group here in Dubbo is quite small but also quite active. All the best for
2023
Regards, Peter
Hey Peter, this here Editor would love to hear more from you when you get

Hello Editor,
Upper Hunter Ulysses volunteer to man the Driver Reviver in
Singleton when in operation over the holidays. We read a few of the
newspaper clippings they have on hand and thought the contents
could be interesting to members, hopefully Ulyssians use Driver
Reviver when travelling, our group certainly do.
Club members from the past Rob and Jenny Merrick and current
member Ted Burley are also members of Lions and put out the call
for assistance which Upper Hunter members readily agree to.
‘Brain Bear’ Davison says you meet people from all over the state,
ask them about their travels, give them a drink and a biscuit and
away they go, refreshed, safe and happy. When talking to people
motorcycling comes up in the conversation, and generally everyone
has a story to tell about their own
experiences, it’s great to hear.
Kerry ‘Soly’ Solman says the time flies
by when volunteering for a 2 hour shift.
Travellers stop just wanting a quick break
but when talking motorcycles the time just
goes.
I’m unsure how to put this as a story, I feel
you would be able to do that for us. I have
attached photos which hopefully will assist.
Cheers, Jimmy Sheedy #43171
