might think that it means to remember only in one’s heart. But the pasuk םייח םימ ראב
also says (Devarim 24:8) “guard yourself from becoming a meh’tzo’rah,
be very careful.” That pasuk is talking about “guarding” in one’s heart. So 'ו קרפ ם"במרה ןושל הזש .'וכו רופיסה ידי לע רבועו )ב(
then what more is added by the pasuk that says “remember”? It is coming
to teach us to “remember” by verbalizing it out loud in order that we will דחא לכ תא בוהאל םדא לכ לע הוצמ 'ג הכלה תועיד תוכלהמ
not come to the point of becoming punished with Tza’ra’at. Meaning, the
first pasuk which admonishes “be careful from Tza’ra’at” is a warning רפסל ךירצ ךכיפל ךומכ ךערל תבהאו רמאנש ופוגכ לארשימ
against speaking Lashon Hara. Together with that is another warning to הצורו ומצע ןוממ לע סח אוה רשאכ ונוממ לע סוחלו וחבשב
“do everything that the Kohanim instruct you,” namely, not to cut off the
Tza’ra’at lesion which is called the Baheret. The next pasuk then warns אבה םלועל קלח ול ןיא וריבח ןולקב דבכתמהו ומצע דובכב
us “remember what Hashem your G‑d did to Miryam,” to remember it בוהאל ,ונושל הזו ג"מר הוצמ ךוניחה ןכ םג בתכ ןכו .ל"כע
openly, verbally.
ונוממו לארשי לע לומחנש רמולכ שפנ תבהא לארשימ דחא לכ
When the Torah commanded us to “remember” what Amalek did גהנתיש אוה לכה ללכש 'וכו ונוממו ומצע לע למוח אוהש ומכ
to us, it was in order for us to know that it is with good reason that
G‑d will annihilate Amalek. It is only because of the great compassion קיחרהלו ונוממ רומשל ומצע םע גהנתמ אוהש ומכ וריבח םע
that Hashem has for us that He will take revenge for the violence they לע סוחיו חבשל םרפסי םירבד וילע רפסי םאו קזנ לכ ונממ
committed against us and because they were not afraid of Him . So too
are we commanded to remember what Hashem did to Miryam so that we 'ח לכב ונייה רבועד םינפב ונבתכש המו .ש"ייע 'וכו ודובכ
will guard ourselves from speaking Lashon Hara in order that we not be .םינפב ונבתכש ומכ םעטהו םינפוא
punished with Tza’ra’at (quoted up until this point is the holy language of
the sefer HaMitzvot. Please see the commentary of the Megilat Esther (on
Sefer HaMitzvot) where he agrees that it is appropriate to count this with

Similarly the Ramban writes in his commentary on perashat Teh’tzeh
regarding the pasuk (Devarim 24:9) “remember what Hashem your G‑d םייחה רוקמ
did to Miryam” as follows: Based on my understanding, this is a positive

commandment just like the positive commandment to remember the טֹפְּשִׁתּ קדֶצבּ"דּ הֵשֲׂע תוצִמבּ )ג( יֵמּנ רבוֹע םיִמעְפִלו )ג(
day that we left Egypt (Shemot 13:3), just like the commandment to

commandment to remember what Amalek did to us (Devarim 25:17). All ,וֹכְּפהל וֹא תוּכזּה דצלוּ בוֹטּה דצל וֹטְפָשׁל הזּה רבדּבּ שׁיו

it is a warning not to speak Lashon Hara. It is expressed as a positive

the righteous prophetess Miryam. She only spoke about her brother who
