2nd ma’amar ׳א ר ָמ ֲא ַמ
of mussar is the work of opening-up one’s spiritual emotions which ם ֶה ָל ה ֶכּ ֻנ ְמ ה ֶז ר ָכ ָשּׂ ֶשׁ ה ָני ִב ֵה אי ִה ."ת ַח ַא ל ֶג ֶר ר ֵס ָח א ֵהְי ךָ ְנ ָח ְל ֻשׁ
reside inside the soul of a person.
בי ִשׁ ְק ִה .שׁוֹד ָקּ ַה וּנ ֵבּ ַר ְל ת ֶשׁ ֶג ָל ם ֶהי ֵנ ְשׁ וּטי ִל ְח ֶה .א ָבּ ַה ם ָלוֹע ָה ֵמ
We find in the Torah’s description of Abraham’s nephew Lot (Beresheet ל ֶג ֶר ה ָר ֵס ֲח הֶי ְה ִתּ ן ֵכ ָא ם ִא ֶשׁ הּ ָל ַחי ִט ְב ִה ְו ,הּ ָת ָנ ֲע ַט ְל שׁוֹד ָקּ ַה וּנ ֵבּ ַר
19:33) “That night the two sisters gave their father wine to drink; he
became drunk and the older sister came and was intimate with her ה ֶאוֹר י ִכ ְו" :ה ָר ְמ ָא .וֹנ ָח ְל ֻשּׁ ִמ ה ָנּ ֶמי ִל ְשַׁי אוּה ,א ָבּ ַה ם ָלוֹע ָבּ ם ָנ ָח ְל ֻשּׁ ִמ
father, and he did not know it as she lay with him or when she got :)ה ,בי( ת ֶל ֶהֹק ְבּ שׁ ָרֹפ ְמ א ָר ְק ִמ אלֹ ֲה ַו ,"אוֹב ָל די ִת ָע ֶל וֹר ֵב ֲח ת ֶא ם ָד ָא
up.” Rashi explains that the words “when she got up” are accentuated
by the Torah, meaning, “when she got up” he knew what he did and ם ָלוֹע ָבּ ב ֵשׁוֹי קי ִדּ ַצ ְו קי ִדּ ַצ ל ָכּ - "וֹמ ָלוֹע תי ֵבּ ל ֶא ם ָד ָא ָה ךְ ֵלֹה י ִכּ"
nevertheless the following night he did not guard himself against getting י ֵר ֲה .ךְ ָכּ ל ַע בי ִשׁ ֵה שׁוֹד ָקּ ַה וּנ ֵבּ ַר ֶשׁ וּני ִצ ָמ אלֹ ְו .וֹלּ ֶשּׁ ִמ ם ָלוֹע ְבּ א ָבּ ַה
drunk again. Rashi’s words need very much explanation. How could
Rashi explain that Lot knew what he did when the older sister “got up” .וֹלּ ֶשּׁ ִמ "ם ָלוֹע" קי ִדּ ַצ ל ָכ ְל שֵׁי א ָבּ ַה ם ָלוֹע ָבּ ֶשׁ ר ָאֹב ְמ
when the pasuk itself says the opposite, that he did not know?! We
explained in the ma’amar entitled “The inner spark driving a person’s ?ה ֶז "ם ָלוֹע" אוֹפ ֵא וּהַמ
actions” that in reality Lot did not know what he had done since he

was drunk. However, when his behavior is examined at the level of its
innermost depths, if despite that he would have listened attentively to

the knocking on his spiritual heart Lot would have heard those delicate - ם ָד ָא ָה ל ֶשׁ י ִמי ִנ ְפּ ַה "וֹמ ָלוֹע"
spiritual feelings and he would have realized that something was not םי ִד ָח ֻי ְמ ַה וי ָתוֹנוּכ ְתוּ וי ָתוֹנוֹר ְשׁ ִכּ
right, and he would not have drunken wine on that second night. Thus,
even though in reality on a conscious level Lot did not know “when
the older one got up” after he had intimate relations with her, within ,וֹלּ ֶשׁ םוּח ְתּ ַבּ ד ָחֻי ְמוּ די ִחָי אוּה ם ָד ָא ל ָכּ :אוּה םי ִר ָב ְדּ ַה רוּאֵבּ
the depths of his innermost feelings he is considered as knowing what ,ם ָמּ ִע ד ָלוֹנּ ֶשׁ תוֹלּ ֻג ְסּ ַה ,וֹתוּיּ ִשׁי ִא ם ִע ְו ם ֶה ָבּ ן ַח ֵנּ ֶשׁ םי ִרוּשּׁ ִכּ ַה ם ִע
he did since he did not examine the core of his actions and he blocked
\ he suffocated the inner emotions of what he did. ה ֶז ָבוּ ,'ה ת ֶא דֹב ֲע ַל וֹל םי ִר ְשׁ ְפ ַא ְמ ַה - וֹבּ תוֹעוּב ְטּ ֶשׁ תוֹנוּכ ְתּ ַה ְו
ם ָלוֹע ."וֹמ ָלוֹע" ל" ַז ֲח ןוֹשׁ ְל ִבּ הָיוּר ְק וֹז תוּיּ ִדוּחִי .ד ָחֻי ְמוּ די ִחָי אוּה
We have an obligation to learn from this that just as in the world of
science there are very sensitive instruments that can detect nature’s תוֹדּ ִמּ ַה ַחוּר י ֵדְי ל ַע ל ָט ְל ֻט ְמ וֹני ֵא ְו ,ה ָבי ִב ְסּ ַה ֵמ ע ָפּ ְשׁ ֻמ וֹני ֵא ֶשׁ
events, for example seismographs that can detect earth’s tremors that די ִעָיּ ֶשׁ "ם ָלוֹע" .וי ָפּ ַל ְכּ תוּי ָר ְח ַא שׁי ִגּ ְר ַמ ם ָד ָא ָה ֶשׁ "ם ָלוֹע" .תוֹע ָר ָה
are imperceptible to us as those earthquake tremors are registered
on the instrument panel, so too in the world of a man’s spirituality .םִי ַמ ָשּׁ ִמ וֹל וּקי ִנ ֱע ֶה ֶשׁ וי ָרוּשּׁ ִכּ ת ֶא ל ֵצּ ִנ ד ַצי ֵכּ
there are sensitive emotions and feelings that not everyone merits to
feel – they are felt only by those people who work on themselves to ת ֶא שׁ ֵשּׁ ַמ ְלוּ אֹצ ְמ ִל ץ ֵמּ ַא ְת ִה ְל ם ָד ָא ָה ל ַע ת ֶצ ֶבוֹר ה ָלוֹד ְגּ הָבוֹח
raise their level of conscious sensitivity and they purify their souls. א ֵלּ ַמ ְל - ת ַח ַא ה ָר ָטּ ַמ ְבּ ם ַשׂוּה ֶשׁ ןי ִב ָה ְל .םֹתּ ד ַע "וֹמ ָלוֹע" ְו וֹתוּיּ ִשׁי ִא
The key to awareness of one’s innermost feelings within a person’s
intellectual soul is to work on himself in a true mussar framework – to ת ַלּ ִס ְמ" ַה י ֵר ְב ִד ְכּ ,וֹמ ָלוֹע ְבּ וֹת ָבוֹח ת ֶא ל ַעֹפּ ַל אי ִצוֹה ְלוּ וֹדי ִק ְפ ַתּ ת ֶא
ה ָמי ִמ ְתּ ַה ה ָדוֹב ֲע ָה שׁ ֶרֹשׁ ְו תוּדי ִס ֲח ַה דוֹסְי" :ר ֶפ ֵסּ ַה ת ַלּ ִח ְת ִבּ "םי ִר ָשְׁי
