                   METHOD B
                  Starting somewhere near the
middle of the rope make the
initial knot form. You may wish
to pin the cord in place, but I
find I can hold it in position
with the flat of my hand. Bring
the rope round and make the
                  second knot, inter-linking it with
the first. Carry on until you get
to the fifth knot, which should
                  inter-link to complete the circle.
Make the knots even and neat Follow round as many times as required
and follow round first, with one
end of the rope and then in the other direction with the other
                                                  end. When the required number
A of passes have been made, the
mat should be worked to a neat
and even form, working out any
slack a bit at a time. It is much
easier to work slack out of a
loose mat than it is to work a bit
of slack back into a tight mat.
You may find that a gentle
thump with a mallet will help to
flatten and even out the mat.
When your mat is how you wish
it to be, finish the ends off at the
back either by side splicing (pages
                                                  107, 108) or seizing (page 27).
