                   METHOD

In the middle of the rope, tie directions as many times as you
either an overhand knot like or as the rope allows. When
(diagram a) or a carrick bend you’ve got the mat to the rough
(diagram d) with the ends on the size and shape, it is then time to
                  same side (sometimes called the  work any slack or irregularity out;
do this a bit at a time as it is very

difficult to work slack back into a
mat that has become too tight.

                  Josephine knot). Pull down a
pair of loops and twist and
overlay as in diagram b, then
bring down first one end of the
                  rope and then the other,
                  interweaving to complete the
design. The knot can then be
                  followed round in both

                   B
Now follow round as many times
                                                            as required

From this start the prolong mat can be
made in the same way as the ocean mat
