In 1979 Shirley Nan Ruchong cda took her first painting class, which began her lifelong love affair with art.
From 1985 to 2012, Shirley and her friend Donna Mays owned a tole shop that operated as a walk-in store.
Eventually it was relocated to Shirley’s home studio, where classes are still being taught. Shirley served on the
SDP Board for two years and has served on many committees over the years. She is a travel-teacher and has
taught at numerous conferences. Shirley publishes her own pattern packets featuring decorative art designs. Oil is
her medium of choice. Shirley’s calla lily design “Delicate Balance” was recently published in Strokes of Genius
5—The Best of Drawing, Design and Composition, published by North Light Books. A floral book published this
year by the National Museum of Decorative Painting will feature another of her calla lily designs. She has also been published in The Decorative Painter and Japan’s Decorative Painting Magazine. Shirley says, “I’m getting more involved in the local painting community, which truly validates my training as a decorative artist.” She is happily single, and has a son who lives in Arizona and a newly mar- ried daughter in Florida. You may write to her at 2440 Frank St., Eureka, CA 95501; call (707) 445-1512; or email her at ruchong@ humboldt1.com. Visit Shirley’s website at www.shirleynanruchong.com.
