20 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 4, 2015
 PREPARATION
PILGRIM PETE AND PUMPKINS
Use the pattern as a guide to carefully cut the following pieces from the white felt: two collar pieces and two cuff pieces. Then cut the hat brim, buckle pieces, shoe tongues, and leaves from the black craft foam. For the beard, you’ll need to cut four different pieces from the brown felt. When cutting the brown felt keep in mind that the measurements listed here are approximate. You’ll need to possibly trim or adjust the measurements to fit your nut- cracker lever. Cut the top piece of the beard approximately 15⁄16" x 1"; the second piece 15⁄16" x 1 3⁄8"; the third piece 15⁄16" x 5⁄8"; and, the fourth piece 15⁄16" x 7⁄8". Next, snip four small cuts at the short end of each piece. (See pattern.) Then cut one 10-inch piece of braided macramé cord to wind around the hat. Cut one eight-inch piece and two six-inch pieces of twisted macramé cord for the pumpkin stems. To prevent fraying on the cords, apply hot glue to each of the ends. When the glue cools down, but is still pliable, pinch the ends to make them smaller. Set aside the costume pieces for later.
