• Introduction : Automobile history and development, Present Scenario
of Automobiles in India and Abroad. General Vehicle layout, Chassis.
• Steering and Suspension System : Steering system, Principle of steering,
General layout of steering system, steering linkages, steering geometry,
wheel alignment, power steering system, turning cycle radius of wheels.
Tyres, specifications, tyre construction, tyre inspection, tyre wear,
wheel balancing, suspension system: Function of springs, shock
absorber, conventional and independent suspension system, spring
design for suspension system.
• Transmission System : Clutch: Necessity, requirement of clutch system,
Types of clutch, size of clutches, Power, Torque transmission
calculations. Transmission: Necessity of transmission, principle, types
of transmission, sliding mesh, constant mesh and synchromesh gear
box. Design of the gear ratios, lubrication of gear box, overdrive:
Automatic Transmission: Propeller shaft, differential need and Types of
rear and front axles. Difference between Automatic and Manual
Transmission in terms of gear shifting without clutch
• Brakes: Need, Type, Mechanical, hydraulic, Pneumatic, Electric Brakes,
General layout of breaking system, stopping distance, braking
efficiency. Anti lock braking system-need.
• Electric Systems : General layout of vehicle electrical system,
Construction, operation and maintenance of lead acid batteries, battery
charging system. Principle and operation of cutouts, starter motor
operation, construction, ignition systems, lighting system. Wiper
system layout, requirement.
• Automobiles air conditioning system, layout and operation. Sensors for
automatic temperature and climate control
• Design consideration, parameters and various aspects of wheeled,
Heavy vehicles-payload, mobility, traction, transmission etc.
