James William Green, MD
James William Green, MD, 80, passed away on October 4 after gallantly fighting dementia and
cancer. A native of Eden, Texas, Dr. Green received his undergraduate and medical degrees at Tulane,
followed by dermatology training at Baylor in Houston and a research fellowship at the University
of London Institute of Dermatology at St. John’s Hospital for Diseases of the Skin. He practiced
dermatology in Austin for over 30 years.
An outgoing, seventh generation Texan, he loved this state and enjoyed being on the ranch. He
always looked down while walking, not because he was avoiding people, but because he was always
on the hunt for arrowheads and Native American artifacts. An avid reader, fisherman, dermatologist,
friend, traveler, and dedicated family man, he spent his life practicing dermatology and loving his amazing wife of 60 years,
Jeanie Mullins Green. He was a perpetual winner at Trivial Pursuit. He loved nothing more than to spend time with his
family; he would stop seeing patients at 3pm to be an active participant in the lives of his children. “Big Papa” fostered a love
of knowledge and pursuits with his beloved grandchildren.
And if you’ve seen a canoe at the bottom of The Devil’s River right after Game Warden falls…he almost caught the
biggest fish, but luckily both got away!
Annis Melinda Rainey, MD
Annis Melinda Rainey, MD, 62, passed away in her sleep in early September. She was an El Paso
native and graduated from UT El Paso with a degree in sculpture before earning a master’s degree
in molecular genetics from UT Austin. That same year, she married her high school sweetheart,
Joel White, who died unexpectedly in Colombia in 2018. She received her medical degree and post
graduate training in ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Rainey moved to Austin in
2006 and developed the pediatric ophthalmology division at Children’s Hospital of Austin, then
served as Section Chief of the Dell Children’s Eye Center for many years. She served as President
of the Children’s Eye Center and as CEO of the Pediatric Specialty Services at Dell Children’s
Medical Center.
In addition to raising two sons, Dr. Rainey had many interests outside of medicine. She loved sculpture and Navajo art,
enjoyed photography, spoke fluent Spanish, and developed a love of cooking. Her friends and colleagues remember her as
generous, authentic, visionary, fearless, and intensely intelligent, consistently providing compassionate and expert care for
her patients and their families. Her favorite musical was Hamilton, especially a line from it, “God help me and forgive me,
I want to build something that’s gonna outlive me.”
Being a physician isn’t easy.
And neither is asking for help.
