youth was to be used to convey him on his last journey and his son Roy asked us to
provide the horse.
We had two choices, Sam who was unpredictable and flighty or steady old Ebony; the
horse that we had sold to Young’s Brewery in Wandsworth and bought back again when
he retired at the age of 15.
Ebony it had to be and we began preparing him for the day.

PREPARATIONS
It was a bright day, not too hot and we were to lead the family procession from Charles’
home to the village church about a mile or so down the road. The cart had been modified
at our request to raise the coffin slightly above the wagon sides and also to provide some
sort of security to prevent the coffin falling out.
