9.18.5 Driving in bright or low sun
The sun can be a significant hazard to any driver or machine operator and according to data
from the Department for Transport, around 3,900 people are injured in accidents caused by
blinding effects of the sun each year.
To remain safe during times of the day when the sun could hinder driving ability here are
some useful tips:
Utilise the sun visor and remain vigilant
Keep your windscreen clean, inside and out
Keep your dashboard free of clutter
Always report a cracked or damaged windscreen
Keep your speed down
Leave greater distances between your vehicle and the vehicle in front
Take your time when performing manoeuvres
If you are operating machinery try and move the machine to an alternative location
so that your vision is not so affected by the sun
If your vision is compromised when operating machinery you should STOP until it is safe
to continue. Under no circumstances should you continue to operate plant and machinery
unless you can see what you are doing clearly
