inspection, and any necessary action taken, shall be entered in the Tip Inspection
book. The Manager shall note and countersign the inspection record.
2. The Quarry Manager shall undertake a formal Geotechnical Appraisal (Regulation
30) for tips that are appraised as a Significant Hazard. The appraisal shall be reported
on a Tip Inspection Sheet. Operation tips should be appraised monthly and closed
tips 6 monthly.
3. Tips and stockpiles shall be operated under the following
conditions:
4. No tip or stockpile will exceed a vertical height of 15m
5. The overall slope of stockpiles shall not exceed the angle
of repose of the stockpile material.
6. Material should not be tipped within 2m of any face.
7. Silt rich or wet chalk or clayey overburden should not be placed close to the face of
a tip or stockpile so as to avoid the risk of slumping, erosion or other instability.
8. It is the responsibility of all personnel to inform the Quarry Manager or their deputy of
any unsafe or dangerous condition or operation.
9. Unstable faces created due to removal of material from a stockpile must be made
safe before further access to the stockpile is allowed.
10. New stockpiles are not to be created without an adequate design and the Manager's
consent.
11. In the event of a failure or signs of a potential failure in a tip or stockpile, the feature
should be closed with an appraisal carried out. If necessary, the failure should be
inspected by the consultant Geotechnical Specialist.
12. Dangerous Conditions – It is the responsibility of any person who believes that the
tip is in a dangerous or unstable condition or is about to become in a dangerous
condition to close the tip immediately and inform the Quarry Manager or his/her
deputy.
