• Rock-traps will be a minimum of 2.5m wide and 1.25m deep, measured from the crest
of the trench or bund serving this purpose. Rock-traps will be installed and maintained
on all benches, haul routes and access ramps.
• Excavated material beneath the excavator shall be managed by the excavator such
that he can move progressively away from the face, staying in a safe position as the
excavated material diminishes in height.
• Faces shall be operated in accordance with the latest recommendations of the
Geotechnical Assessment carried out under Regulation 33. The findings of
Geotechnical Assessment shall be copied to Quarry Manager.
• Access beneath unstable or any disused faces shall be restricted by the use of
suitable barriers or bunds placed at least 5 metres from the base.
• Face edges (including access routes) shall be protected to ensure that vehicles
cannot be driven over the edge. Edge protection bunds of suitable height and
construction (Reg 13 of the Quarries Regulations 1999) are required where vehicles
are to move nearby. The positioning of large rocks back from the edge may be used
away from haul routes but must comply with Reg 13.
• Excavations in soft material shall be carried out such that faces cannot collapse
unintentionally. A risk assessment for this nature of work must be carried out and kept
on file, together with a permit to work.
• Access ramps shall not exceed a slope of 1:10 unless a risk assessment has been
carried out and special provisions made.
• Other than in the working quarry, no excavation shall take place before a search for
underground cables has taken place and a Permit to Dig issued.
• It is the responsibility of all personnel to inform the Quarry Manager or their deputy of
any unsafe or dangerous condition or operation.
• All roads and quarry floor must be kept free from spillage and loose rock. The loading
shovel is to be summoned for rocks not safely manageable.
Quarry Tipping
This due to the equipment being used on site is very
important that staff are adequately trained.
Edge protection must be in place before tipping.
The load must be evenly placed on the trailer or dumper
and if the load does not raise evenly whilst tipping, then the
tipping must be stopped and additional help sought.
This will mean the excavator will be required to level and
re-distribute the load more evenly before trying again.
Stockpiles
1. Tips and stockpiles shall be inspected daily by the Quarry Manager or his deputy, for
defects or dangerous conditions, paying particular attention to the suitability of the
