13 Overhead Cables
Drivers of all Company vehicles/plant must be aware of overhead
cables before entering any site or unclassified roads.
Drivers must also be aware of cables that may be obscured by trees
or bushes.
Contact with overhead power cables could result in death or serious injury
under no circumstances should you attempt to get out of the cab or touch
any metal objects in your cab if cables are touched. If cables are touched attempt to make a
phone call using your mobile telephone and wait for help to arrive.
Also be aware of flash over which is where your vehicle gets within conducting distance and
the electricity can jump across to your vehicle, keep a safe distance of 10 metres away from
over head power lines.
Call 105 or 999 in an Emergency
What to do if you come into contact with an Overhead Power Line (OHPL)
If part of a vehicle or load is in contact with an OHPL, you should remain in the cab and
inform the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) immediately (If you are unsure of the
number then call the office on your mobile phone).
Warn others to stay away.
Try to drive clear. If this is not possible, and you need to leave the vehicle to escape fire,
JUMP CLEAR – do not dismount by climbing down the steps.
Never try to disentangle equipment until the owner of the line has confirmed that it has
been de-energised and made safe.
WARNING: Contact with an overhead power line may cause
the power to ‘trip out’ temporarily and it may be re-energised
automatically, without warning.
This picture was taken from a 30 year old man who came into
contact with 240volts.
