16 Daily Vehicle/Plant Checks
Correct completion of plant defect sheets is required not just by TJ but the law under the Provision
and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 98)
Plant defect sheets are a very important document as they are not only a tool for the company to
be able to monitor damage, machinery use, plan maintenance but possibly most importantly for
you they could become the evidence you need to rely on in court should a serious accident
happen, to help defend yourself or TJ.
So, as a plant/machinery operator at TJ you are expected to carry out the daily checks detailed
on the inspection sheet, these checks are only a guide and any additional useful information
should be recorded at the start of your shift on each machine working day.
The inspection should include a complete walk round of the machine, checking for leaks,
worn hoses/pins/bushes and damage that has occurred since the previous day/use of the
machine.
When completing your plant inspection form, any defects or damage found must be
accurately recorded in the boxes provided, if enough space is not available then accurate
recording should be written on the reverse of the form with as much detail provided as
possible including the date reported.
If a major defect is found then you must notify your Foreman immediately for further action
to be taken and you must not operate the machine until further instruction has been given.
Operators should be greasing their plant daily, (as detailed on the inspection list) this can
be done in a methodical way throughout your working day, starting with the important
grease points first such as the grab on the 360 or the z bar linkage on the shovel. But
completion of greasing the machine must take place
You should all be cleaning your machines, you are responsible for the cleanliness of the
machine, including the interior of the cabs, (Vacuum cleaners are provided to remove dust)
cab glass, mirrors and reversing cameras to be cleaned and correctly adjusted, to ensure
good all-round visibility.
Mirrors should also be adjusted to suit the operator; you should be able to see the edges
of the machine and an outward view of the surrounding area. Never operate a new machine
without adjusting the mirrors first. Reversing aids such as reversing cameras should also
be operational, clean and clear of obstruction. Other reversing or manoeuvring aids such
as bleepers and flashing beacons should be audible and visibly illuminate.
Blowing out of the radiators from the inside out and the cab filters along with outer air filters
to ensure general wellbeing for the item of plant you are using.
The above must become second nature to you all please.
