Getting there: Drive State Route 159 (Charleston Boulevard) toward Red Rock Canyon and turn right
onto Calico Basin Road. In about 2/10 of a mile, you’ll spot the parking area on your left.

quickly you encounter the turn. This part of the
hike is steep and there is loose footing in places,
so take care.
Once at the bottom of the wash, stay on the
right side. The trail keeps going along the wash
area. You'll see where another trail goes up and
over the hill to the Red Spring picnic area. Unless
you want to do a lot more walking, do NOT
follow this trail but stay in the wash.
The trail will cross the wash a few times and
you'll soon see some of the homes in the Calico
Basin area. The last part of the trail will bring you
to the fence where you started and you will have
completed a nice loop. The first time I hiked this
route I saw burros along the Donkey Way Trail
but I have not seen any since then.
