Friends volunteers work throughout the year for the benefit of the Rock and our guests. These critical jobs include
cultural documentation and monitoring, tortoise care and feeding, interacting with thousands of visitors,
maintaining and repairing miles of trails and organizing community events. Red Rock Canyon would not be able to
provide the same services without the invaluable assistance and contributions from our dedicated volunteers.

The Red Spring Award, given to Anne McConnell and Elaine Holmes,
recognized their contributions in Cultural Resource documentation. They are
active Site Stewards, coordinators for the Red Rock area and Friends’ Cultural
Resource teams. They are responsible for developing detailed narratives of rock
art panels. Both ladies are nationally recognized by the rock art community and
have assisted in recording rock art sites throughout Nevada.

Joseph and Mary Labie were presented with the Grand Circle Award.
The Labie’s have been Friends members since 1999 and have contributed
over 1,500 volunteer hours. Joe and Mary have taken the lead role on the
photo contest, have helped at all events as well as assuming the Chair
positions of the Ways & Means committee in 2007. They infuse every
project or event with their own brand of enthusiasm and talent.

Roger and Susan Kolar were given the Director’s Award. Members since
2002 with over 1,600 hours, Roger and Susan began volunteering in 2005 on
the Site Stewardship program. They expanded their enthusiasm and talent to
the Tortoise Habitat. Roger and Susan assumed the chair position for the
Tortoise Habitat committee in the spring of 2010 and have recruited dozens of
volunteers eager to work with the resident tortoise superstar, Mojave Max,
      and his celibate harem.

The inaugural Sustaining Partner Award was presented to Tom Warden,
representing The Howard Hughes Corporation, for their long-standing
commitment to Friends and the National Conservation Area. Their contributions
have ranged from event sponsorships to funding trail signage for the
Conservation Area. The Howard Hughes Corporation epitomizes responsible and
                                       caring corporate partnerships.
