There is a popular story that has gone around,
saying that BBDO originated in an elevator in
a Madison Avenue building. Apparently, Roy Durstine
was riding up with William Johns, president of the Batten
Company, and Johns remarked to Durstine, “Did it ever
occur to you that we do not have any competing accounts?”
I think it is just a story and probably did not happen.
It is a great one, though.
