importance of knowing the “motives” of those seeking
to work with us. The better we understand the motives
of the applicants desiring to join our staff, the better we are equipped to make the right decision concerning their uniting with us. And when we are aware of their “real” motives, and we can still respond with an unequivocal “yes” to them, we will be aware of the direction we should pursue in our relationship together.
In the past, due to my desperation for staff help, I have been famous (or infamous) for welcoming almost anyone who professed to be a Christian and expressed a willing- ness to work on staff with me (as I write this, I need to clarify the fact that I am in no way referring to the won- derful staff God has blessed me with at the present time).
At first, I was unwilling to enter into any new line of thinking concerning this matter. However, over the years, I have learned (the hard way) that it was necessary for me to establish detailed staff guidelines which all applicants must meet before they are “even considered” to be viable candidates for our staff.
These guidelines I am going to share with you here,
in no way negates the power of prayer and the seeking of the Lord concerning each person desiring to join your staff. I am suggesting though, that rather than just praying over each potential staff member, why not pray in ad- vance concerning what criteria all future applicants must meet before they are even considered for any position
on your staff??? If you feel there may be certain criteria God would have you prepare and follow, why not begin praying now about what should be included (or excluded) from these guidelines?
