TEXT 1
Main topic:
Information
about
Komodo
dragons
1
Did you know any
gentleman named
Komodo? Well, he is my
friend! Let us get to know
Pre-reading session him.
2
Asks student to create their own K-W-L Chart on a piece of sheets according to the given model template.
Before distributing the text for their reading activity, do a quick Q&A on certain things. For example, asks them
to list a few animals as many as possible in 2 minutes. After listing the animals, asks them to put each of it
under their own categories such as mammal, reptile, amphibians, fish, and birds.
Make a random question to the class asking them if anyone put a lizard in their list of animals. Tell the students
While-reading session
that the main topic of the learning session will be focusing solely on lizards. Within 3 minutes, asks them to jot
down any information or general knowledge regarding lizard on the "what I know?" column.
3
Distribute the text to them and remind them to put any information from the text that they know beforehand
in the "Know" column. For example, "Komodo dragons are the heaviest lizards on earth" and general traits of
lizards or reptiles from the text such as "They have long, flat heads with rounded snouts, scaly skin, bowed
legs, and huge, muscular tails.". In this stage, students are required to add exclamation marks(!) on any
interesting or additional facts that intrigued their curiosity on "what I wonder or want to know" column. They
can use the six questions of journalism on the board as prompts (Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?).
Take for example, "... the lizards will eat anything, including deer, large water buffaloes and also humans".
This information might make the students wonder why the lizards even eat the human. They will mostly try to
Post-reading session
find the reason in the text if provided or make their own additional reading. The answer to this question will
be in the table of fast facts provided in the text (diet explanation).
Give them about 30 minutes to finish the whole text and doing the activity within it. After the time is up,
instruct them to fill in the "what I have learned?" column. For example, "I have learned that the Komodo
dragon is a dangerous form of lizards unlike domestic lizards in household". Ask them to clarify any
misunderstanding from their prior knowledge and refer to the text for solid facts.
