attention and respect.
b Exhibit courteous treatment regardless of race,
ethnic origin, sexual orientation, and economic or
financial status.
b Maintain eye contact.
b If using an EHR, the laptop should be positioned
so that eye contact may be made while entering
information.
b Sit at the patient’s level when talking to him or her.
b Use effective verbal communication.
b Speak with a friendly tone of voice.
b Listen attentively.
b Establish a communication pattern in which the
patient feels that his or her comments are valuable.
b Use language appropriate to the patient’s level of
understanding.
b Demonstrate awareness of cultural, language, age,
or comprehension barriers.
