SVMIC Risk Reduction Series: Communication
Likewise, other categories of breakdowns or failures (Physician
and Staff or Physician and Physician) are potentially going to
be improved by looking at systems and protocols to improve
communication. We will examine common areas where
communication issues arise such as informed consent, handoffs,
testing, formal/informal consultations, after-hours calls, etc.,
and ways to improve communication in these situations with
patients, colleagues, and staff.
Physician to Patient Communication
Clear communication is key to the success of any relationship,
especially the physician-patient relationship. Many factors
may interfere with clear communication between physicians
and patients in today’s fast-paced environments. Doctors are
stressed and dealing with large patient loads, and it may seem
as if every day brings a new regulation or rule to implement.
EHR systems, although intended to make the user’s life
easier, are often a source of stress and frustration, and can
pull attention away from the patient. Patients may sense this
stress when the physician is hurriedly moving from room to
room, which can leave patients feeling that the doctor has no
time to answer questions about their condition or treatment.
A lack of communication between patient and doctor may
lead to misunderstandings, thereby increasing the likelihood
of mistakes that could place the patient’s health and treatment
at risk — and that can leave the physician in jeopardy for
malpractice litigation.
