SVMIC Obstetrics Risks: Delivering the Goods
As depicted in the graph, 64 percent of the claims included a
breakdown in communication, while documentation failures
were represented in 49 percent of these claims, and systems
issues were found in just over one-fourth (27 percent) of the
claims. While each of these three factors may not have been
the primary basis for the negligence claim, they each played a
significant role that either negated any chance for the defense
to obtain supporting standard of care experts or presented an
obstacle that a jury could not ignore regardless of whether or
not the standard of care was met. Let’s examine each of these
three major categories in more depth and discuss ways for
improvement.
