THE BEGINNING OF RACING SLOUGHIS
IN THE USA
BY M.-DOMINIQUE CRAPON DE CAPRONA - USA
There are two American organizations for sighthound amateur racing in which Sloughis
can participate.
The National Oval Track Racing Association (NOTRA) was created in 1992.
In 1994, when I contacted then National Race Director of NOTRA Jack W. Lewis, he was
very open to the idea of racing Sloughis and proposed that I should bring them to a test
run.
The Sloughis were invited to race in Bennett, Colorado, an 8-hour drive one way from
where we lived. The NOTRA event was organized by the Rocky Mountain Sporting
Whippets Club on August 21-22, 1994. The Sloughis were trained after the awards on
Saturday and raced provisionally on Sunday. Thanks to the members of that club, Linda
and Tim Sanders and Jack W. Lewis of Reata Whippets’ support the Sloughi was
recognized by NOTRA in December 1994.
The 5 Sloughis who got the breed recognized for oval racing:

and left with Aswad Shi’Rayân, Amir Shi’Rayân, and Rif de Moreau.
