The temporary Greyhound muzzles were replaced by English wire muzzles at the Nationals 1997
“Inspired by the Sloughi” as he wrote it*, Jack W. Lewis created the Large Gazehound
Racing Association (LGRA) for straight racing in 1995, of which the Sloughi is a
foundation breed.
Because Whippets have their own three straight racing associations, LGRA offers sprint
racing to the other sighthound breeds, specifically: Afghan Hound, Azawakh, Basenji,
Borzoi, Chart Polski, Cirneco dell’Etna, Greyhound, Ibizan Hound, Irish Wolfhound, Italian
Greyhound, Magyar Agar, Pharaoh Hound, Portuguese Podengo Medio/Grande,
Rhodesian Ridgeback, Saluki, Scottish Deerhound, Silken Windhound, and Sloughi.
The recognition of the Sloughi in American Amateur racing was spearheaded by members
of the Sloughi Fanciers Association of America. Nobody else in Sloughi helped. Of all the
sighthound sports associations in the USA, the American racing community welcomed the
Sloughi the fastest (with a few irrelevant disgruntled voices claiming Sloughis are Salukis).
