General Information – Presentation – Character - Traditions
The Sloughi is a splendid animal, with a proud and distinguished appearance, a haughty
and nostalgic expression, and heraldic and nonchalant poses. He represents one of the
oldest breeds of dogs in the world and has perpetuated through the centuries an integral
purity of blood jealously maintained in the complete purity of the lines, by his natural
master the Arab, traditionalist par excellence.
Arabian sighthound, the Sloughi is the nomad’s dog par excellence found throughout
North Africa. It is the favorite of the sons of the Great Tent who use him both for pleasure
and utility in hunting hare, jackal, fox, gazelle and even mouflon and wild boar. He also
reveals himself as much by instinct as by the necessities of his harsh existence, a
formidable guard dog and always a fighting dog as courageous as he is wise.
It is among the great nomads of the Saharan zone that the best breeding of Sloughis lives
and prospers, it is there that the purest, most typical and most brilliant subjects can be
identified, in a word, the most complete. In this regard, let us cite the eminently
instructive opinion of an old Saharan: Captain interpreter Coget, who has perfect
knowledge and long practice of the Sloughi in his own country. Here is how he addresses
it, through some lively evocations of a long personal experience, in terms which have the
pleasure of both presenting and situating Sloughi in its true surroundings.
