LABA'AN II AL KHALIJ, SALUKI, BORN OCTOBER 1977 IN AL-KHOBAR, SAUDI ARABIA
Laba'an II Al Khalij, Saluki from the Arabian Peninsula,
breeder Dr. John Burchard. Unknown photographer
Al Khalij is the kennel name of Salukis bred by Dr. John Burchard. His Saluki breed
consists exclusively of Salukis from the Arabian Peninsula.
Laba'an II Al Khalij is a Saluki according to the pedigree drawn up by Dr. John E. Burchard
in Zurich on 21 January 1981. The parents are both Salukis whelped in Saudi Arabia.
Mother Jet (see photo with Sha'ilah, above), whelped in November 1973 by SKH Prince
Muqrin bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, father Dasman, whelped in May 1974, born to the Beni Hajr
Bedouins.
Jet was the female image of La'aban, writes Jim Hans Peter Oechslin. She was, according
to Dr. John Burchard's description, black “with red fire”, short-haired.
Burchard describes Laba'an II as black/red and smooth, his litter sister Thabya II as
brown/red and feathered. Both Salukis are therefore heterozygous and thus cannot be
Sloughis.
So we have three generations with Laba'an as their name: Abu Laba'an, whelped in the
1960s by the Al Mutair Bedouins, his son Laba'an, whelped in 1969, was bred by the Al
Thani family in Qatar and finally the grandson Laba'an II, whelped in October 1977 by Dr.
John Burchard in Al Khobar.
Abu Laba'an, bred by the Al Mutair Bedouins, is therefore not the La'aban of Barghash
described by Elizabeth Dawsari, bred by the Bani Khaldi Bedouins.
