However, Rüdiger Daub also tells us about the difficulties of distinguishing smooth
Salukis from Sloughis: "In typical variants of their breed, both are nevertheless very easy to
distinguish from each other, whereas a smooth variant of the Tazy, which also occurs and is
bred here as the "smooth Saluki", blurs the dividing line.
In England, this, together with the same meaning of the names, led to a register created in
1972 for the Sloughi as an independent breed being closed again two years later on the
grounds that the Sloughi and smooth Saluki did not represent different breeds and that the
entries should therefore be made in the Saluki register.
On the continent, this view was not accepted. However, due to the obviously close
relationship between Sloughi and Tazy ("Saluki"), it can be assumed that both have lived
through a large part of their history together." (Rüdiger Daub, Windhunde der Welt 1979)
Historical references follow.
This judgement based solely on external appearance (phenotype), i.e. the short-haired
coat, must be regarded as a problem of breeding according to the standard. The
character traits and origins mentioned under phenotype in the standard are
disregarded. However, the racing ability of the imported Salukis is emphasised, which is
obviously desired by the SKG at this time.
