LANDRACE SALUKI AND SLOUGHI, USED FOR BREEDING ACCORDING TO
FCI, KC, AND AKC
Two statements by Dr. John Burchard, importer and breeder of Salukis from the Arabian
Peninsula, and Prof. Dr Helmut Quaritsch, President of the German Sighthound Racing
and Breeding Association DWZRV 1986 / 87.
In the meantime, a few years have passed since the Saluki Laba'an II Al Khalij was
recognised as a Sloughi. He has covered three females of a litter from the Saluki male
Jenna from Syria with a Sloughia in France at the kennel of Mme Rey. The litters produced
much racetrack success and later also at shows, this encouraged interest in combining
Salukis and Sloughis under the name of "Sloughis", although according to the FCI
standard, they should have been designated as mixed breeds.
1986 Dr. John Burchard writes to the President of the Swiss SKG, Mrs Helly Vogt,
following an appointment with the Working Committee on Breeding Questions & SHSB.
He tries to explain his point of view and the background to breeding on the Arabian
Peninsula. He feels misunderstood by the breeding commission.
