Another origin for the short-haired Salukis is Turkey. Central Anatolia up to the Turkish-
Syrian border are mentioned. In the area near Şanlıurfa, for example, close to the Syrian
border, there are short haired sighthounds that are called "Teji" by the Kurds living there.
But there are also feathered Salukis from Syria. In the photo below we see a mix of
feathered Saluki and smooth Teji. Nevşehir and Aksaray, as they are called there.
The short-haired Teji, which is called Aksaray,
refers to the city of Aksaray south of Ankara. At this
point, let us also speculate and surmise: The Celtic
tribes described by Arrian, who hunted with the
Vertragus, settled in central Anatolia and founded
Ankyra, today's Ankara.

REFLECTION ON THE BACKGROUND OF MIXING MIDDLE EASTERN SALUKIS WITH
NORTH AFRICAN SLOUGHIS
If you ask me: Is a Sloughi the same as a Saluki?
Here is my answer:
- A Sloughi is a dog. Yes.
- A Saluki is a dog. Yes.
- So a Sloughi is the same as a Saluki? No.
With the foundation of the "Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club" in 1923 on the occasion of the
Crufts Show, where Hon. Florence Amherst and 12 other Saluki breeders met to work out
a common standard for breeding, the foundations for such a misunderstanding were
already laid at that time, to integrate Middle Eastern Salukis into the breeding of North
African Sloughis.
