The region referred to in English as the "Greater Middle East", which also includes North
Africa up to the Sahel, is not described in the standard. It would therefore be important to
define a more precise description of the relevant areas of the Saluki's countries of origin
in the FCI standard.

A brief comment on the size of the ears. Animals that live in deserts or in very warm areas
have large ears, animals that live in steppe areas or in cooler areas have medium to
smaller ears. The ears serve to equalise body temperature. According to the FCI standard,
the Sloughi has ears not too large and triangular in shape (French formulation: pas trop
grandes, de forme triangulaire). Accordingly, the Sloughi is not a desert animal. The
Sloughi lives primarily in the fertile areas and steppes of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.
Sloughis can also occur in the deserts, but are not predominantly found there.
The ears of the Saluki are described as long, but in fact they are significantly larger than
those of the Sloughi. So, compared to the Saluki, the Sloughi does not come from deserts
or very warm areas, but the Saluki does.
