SUMMARY
Based on the two foundation dogs of Montouchet de la Horde d'Or, Jenna from Syria and
Laba'an II al Khalij from Saudi Arabia, who were not Sloughis according to the origins of the
current FCI standard, it must be noted that the first generation after Laba'an II Al Khalij has a
Saluki percentage of 62.5 %. For example, in the mating with Okaline du Montouchet de la
Horde d'Or, whose father was Jenna. This Sloughi / Saluki ratio of 62.5% Saluki is permanent
from this generation onwards.
By line breeding, this ratio is essentially maintained and even increased with appropriate
mating.
The argument that these dogs were registered for breeding over 40 years ago as Sloughis
and that many generations have been re-bred cannot be accepted. Inherited genes do not
simply disappear. Especially when line breeding, in which the ratio of Sloughi and Saluki is
maintained in each litter, the inherited parts from the non-Sloughi are passed on to each
generation. The offspring will therefore not become more Sloughi and they will not
become less Saluki.
Unfortunately, Jenna's registration as a Sloughi cannot be verified by means of documents or
an appraisal. According to the current standard, his Syrian origin is clearly to be regarded as
Saluki. It remains obscure.
In France, however, he was entered in the breeding register for Sloughis LOF (Livre des
Origines Français).
The documents of Laba'an II Al Khalij clearly prove that he was a Saluki and had Saluki
offspring, for example Turfah. As such he was also described as a Saluki by his breeder, Dr.
John Burchard, in several documents.
The problem is the assessment of him in Switzerland as a Sloughi.
Brigitte Steinmaßl, hunter and falconer, also adds: "... since short-haired Salukis were not
known at the time, all short-haired sighthounds were categorised as Sloughis. I was in the
center ring a lot with Dieter Grams (Bersheba's) and we discussed the Saluki-Sloughi issue a
lot back then. Back then, you could often see in the ring that the tails were "shaved".
Both dogs, Jenna and Laba'an II Al Khalij, were therefore not registered as Saluki on the basis
of the currently valid standards, but as Sloughis, in the case of Laba'an II Al Khalij even the
then already valid standard of January 1981 was disregarded with the requirement of an origin
in North Africa for a Sloughi. The same applies to the offspring of these dogs.
