JOSEPH MANGELSDORF
In Memoriam
BY M.-DOMINIQUE CRAPON DE CAPRONA - USA
Many years ago, in 2004 I met Joseph Mangelsdorf for the first time in an online
discussion. He was talking about Sloughis in Algeria where he had been several times.
In private conversations later, which resulted in an interview on
www.preservingthesloughi.net, he told me the following:
“From 1977 to 1980, I stayed in Tlemcen and made trips to Taghit (Colomb Béchar); I saw few
Sloughis, except for a few populations among nomads in Sebdou, south of Tlemcen. From
these nomads I received as a gift my first Sloughi, Anthar, whom I brought home to
Germany, where he lived for 12 years.
In 1980 and 1983, I was in Souk Ahras with trips to Gardaia; few Sloughis.
Some populations in the Biskra region.
From 2005 to 2008, I stayed in El Kala. Because of the insecurity that reigned in the country,
no trip was possible, and I didn't see any Sloughis in this region.
Since January 2010, I have been staying in Tiaret and visiting the Tlemcen region several
times, where I have noted the presence of numerous Sloughis north of Tlemcen (particularly
in Bensekrane and Sidi Abdelli).
According to the people of Bensekrane, there is also a population of these dogs in Tiaret,
which I plan to visit soon.”
