I told him my dream had always been to own an Algerian Sloughi, because my first two
Sloughis, Lakh and Massouah d’Ymauville, had Algerian ancestors. He told me he could
help. Due to security reasons in a politically volatile Algeria at the time, it took 6 years
before Joseph could resume his job in Algeria and visit the hunters of Bensekrane. He
visited several times with a security guard in 2010, then again in 2011.
At the time ASNAS (Association for the Support of North African Sloughis) was in its early
stages, starting in Morocco in 2008. Joseph developed the ASNAS project in Bensekrane
with A. Fidjel. While there he also helped the hunters’ Sloughis with veterinary products
paid out of his own pocket.
His visits with the Bensekrane people resulted in an incredible photo documentary of the
Algerian Sloughis in western Algeria. These photos opened western eyes to how Sloughis
in this country of origin look like and live, 160 years after the first detailed description by
General Daumas. Some of his best and most informative photos are featured in his album
at the end of this issue.
Joseph was given two puppies for us: Rsassa and Saff. Respecting the tradition that says,
“one does not sell a Sloughi”, Abderrahmen Fidjel (Rsassa) and Nabil Medjoub (Saff) gifted
us the two puppies; we responded with a very generous monetary donation to
Bensekrane’s Sloughis through ASNAS.
